Celtic knocked out of the Europa by Zenit St. Petersburg

It was another disappointed day in office for Brendan Rodgers and his Celtic team as they crashed out of the Europa league. This was a very appalling display from the Bhoys. Celtic had already won 1-0 in Scotland but went to Russia to capitulate to Zenit 3-0.

Many Celtic fans would have expected a better performance from their side than what was on display on the night in Russia but this was not the night to be. The Hoops now have to face the league and Scottish cup.

This bearings about the clamor of what Celtic ambition is really. Are they just a team that want to dominate Scotland and all of those years of dominance won’t transcend to any impact in any of the European tournament?

We might be asking for too much if we say Celtic should win the champions league but going as far as possible in the Europa league and if possible, win it is not an impossible task. However, to do that some things have to change about the club.

Clubs dominating in European competition spend a lot on squad depth. Celtic don’t have that. The financial muscle the likes of Manchester United and Sevilla, the last two winners of Europa league, flex does not tally with Celtic’s financial capability.

This however does not mean the Hoops can’t get decent players with European experience for cheap prices that could still take them beyond the round of 32. Celtic need to be doing more than what they currently are doing.

Brendan Rodgers was brought in not to just win the Scottish league but have constant presence in European competition with good outing. They can do this if Rodgers and his players can be more tactical and manage his team better.
