Lionel Messi reached a new landmark on Sunday in his career as he netted his 600th career goal. This goal came against their closest rival in the league, Atletico Madrid at Camp Nou.
Messi scored a spectacular free kick in the first half to give Barcelona a 1-0 win which extended Barca’s lead on the La Liga table to eight points.
The 30-year-old was on another level in the match than every other player on the afternoon.
It took Messi just 747 games for both club, Barcelona and country, Argentina to reach this landmark. 539 for Barca and 61 for Argentina. The free kick was Messi’s 32nd goal of the season.
The Argentine has become a demi-god in football after several achievements. When he scored his first ever goal for Barcelona in 2005 against Albacete, many saw the potential of a player that could go ahead to be the greatest back then.
He attains another level when he became the club’s highest goal scorer in 2015 when he overtook Paulino Alcantara, who netted 369 goals for the Catalan side between 1912 and 1927.
Scoring his 600th career goals against Atletico Madrid was a great moment but there was even a bigger moment as he scored his 500th goal for Barca against fierce rival, Real Madrid in the Classico last April at the Bernabeu in the famous 3-2 win.
Messi’s goal scoring record is just a part of how great he is and not a complete representation of his greatness. Whenever Messi plays, it delights the heart and oppositions have testify that seeing him hold the ball scares them than anyone else.
He has been doomed the greatest ever to ever play football. The only thing left for Messi to win is the world cup but the fact remains that with or without the world cup, Messi will forever be remembered as one of the biggest name that ever graced the sport.
