Liverpool have finally completed the signing of Southampton defender, Virgil Van Dijk for a record fee of £75m. The 26-year-old Dutch international will be teaming up with his new team at Anfield after a deal had earlier been agreed with Southampton last week. The £75m paid for his services will be the highest ever paid for a defender in world football.
Van Dijk signed a long-term contract at Anfield and will be ready to make his impact in the Liverpool defense. Van Dijk have earlier been in the midst of an unethical transfer dealings which Southampton reported the case and made Liverpool pull out of the deal last summer.
This time around the Reds returned early enough and paid the required amount stated the Saints as Pep Guadiola’s Manchester City are also monitoring his situation then. Now Liverpool can now move for other players on their watch list.
There have been talks about the huge amount paid to get his services but the player is not buying any of that but rather ready to focus on his football as he stated that Liverpool is the right place for him to develop as a player. He believed he couldn’t have done anything about the price as it’s between both clubs.
He will however not be able to make his debut today as his papers will not have been completely sorted out. He is expected to make his debut against local rivals, Everton in the third round of the FA cup on Friday at Anfield.
Liverpool will be glad that they have finally gotten themselves a commanding defender in Van Dijk that also comes with premier league experience. He is a very good player for the club and hopefully with him, Liverpool defensive errors will reduce.
